Brain entrainment refers to the frequency-following response that occurs within the brain in response to the frequency or cyclic speed of a specific audio signal.

When two similar but slightly different tones are delivered to the brain , one to the right ear and the other to the left ear, it is believed that the superior olivary nucleus perceives the difference between the two tones and hears in their stead a single tone, which is essentially the difference-tone between the two tones.

Because of the size of the human skull, human beings are able to register binaural beats when the carrier frequency is below 1000 Hz, which means that the waveform of the carrier frequency is longer than the inside of the skull.

Binaural BeatsIf we deliver a 590 Hz tone, for example, to your right ear and a 583 Hz tone to the left ear, an amplitude-modulated standing wave—the binaural beat will emerge as the waveform bounces off the curvature of the inside of your skull.

The binaural beat, interestingly, will cycle at exactly the rate of the difference between the two tones, which, in this case, is 7 Hz, falling within the Theta brainwave pattern.
