Entrainment Affects Your Life and Personal Results Everyday
It's important to understand that the principle of entrainment is itself nothing really new.In fact, you may be surprised to discover that entrainment is happening within your body and brain every day, even this very moment.
Surprised?
Circadian Rhythms: A Form of Brain Entrainment
Have you ever heard of Circadian Rhythms? These refer to how your brain rhythmically synchronizes - or entrains - to cycles (or rhythms) of light and darkness which therefore regulate your sleep cycle.
In other words, if you are like most human beings who retire to bed and wake up afterward on a fairly consistent schedule, it's because your brain and body have rhythmically entrained to this pattern.
But that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how incredibly pervasive the principle of entrainment is in our lives.
Empathetic Conversations and Brain Entrainment
William Condon of Pennsylvania's Western State Psychiatric Institute, for example, discovered that, when examined with electroencephalography (EEG), empathetic conversations between people exhibited something very peculiar:
Their brainwaves were synchronizing - that is, ENTRAINING - with one another.
When Children Play, Entrainment Happens
In another study, anthropologist Edward T. Hall observed that virtually all of the children playing in a certain schoolyard were playing and moving in perfect step with the rhythm being composed and arranged by the movements of a single girl, who was unconsciously acting as the conductor of this strange orchestra.
Even more astonishing, not one of these children realized this was happening; not even the little girl who was orchestrating the entire dance!
In fact, when Hall and his team realized the distinct rhythm to which the school children were entrained, they added a song to the video-taped event and watched in amazement as these children unknowingly danced in perfect synchrony with the song!
THAT'S the power and persuasive influence of entrainment.
And just as those children were, unbeknownst to them, entraining to the environment around them, we are also continually entraining to our surroundings, often unconsciously.
This understanding helps us to come to a revealing conclusion:
Our brains do not live in isolation. Our brains are being influenced all of the time.
